Pros and Cons of Alkaline Water

January 9, 2012  |  Alkaline Water

One of the latest trends to reach the health and supplement market is alkaline water. Alkaline water has a higher pH level than typical bottled or tap water, and many believe that it can help rid the body of various ailments. Before you decide whether or not the benefits of alkaline water are right for you, here is a look at some of the pros and cons.

Benefits of alkaline water

For those patients that believe in the health benefits of alkaline water, the results speak for themselves. Many of the benefits of alkaline water can be traced back to the higher pH level that alkaline water has. This higher pH level can help to even out acid levels through the body. High acid levels are believed by some researchers to be responsible for many chronic diseases, such as arthritis, cancer, and diabetes.

Another benefit of alkaline water is that it contains dissolved minerals. These minerals are what allow alkaline water to maintain its higher pH levels; water that is truly pure will not contain these balancing minerals and will have a lower pH level. The body is able to absorb these minerals and use them easily. This can help to prevent the body from leaching alkaline minerals from the bones and other tissues, helping to prevent problems like osteoporosis.

A third benefit of alkaline water is the fact that it is made up of smaller clusters of water molecules than traditional water which are more easily absorbed by the cells of the body. This allows alkaline water to pass in and out of cells, helping to hydrate you better and helping to flush toxins and acids from the cells. Simple hydration and removal of toxins can help users to feel the benefits of alkaline water more quickly than other diet and health plans.

Cons of alkaline water

One of the biggest downsides of alkaline water is the cost. In order to drink true alkaline water at home, you will need to invest in a special filter. There are also drops that you can add to regular water to make it more alkaline, as well as bottled alkaline water that you can buy. However, this can add up quickly when compared to the cost of drinking water from your tap.

Another downside of alkaline water is that, like many natural remedies, there have been no official studies to verify the validity of the claims it makes. Many claims of the benefits of alkaline water come from it’s users, while opponents to the use of alkaline water will claim that it has mostly a placebo effect and that similar results can be made simply by drinking regular water and eating a healthy diet. Many of the clinical uses of alkaline water are done in Korea and Japan, which do not follow the same guidelines as the United States for testing.

At worst, alkaline water is an overpriced version of the water available on tap in nearly every American home. At best, it is the answer to numerous chronic diseases, including degenerative ones like arthritis, cancer and diabetes. The only way for you to know if it will work for you is to give it a try yourself.
